Sesame seeds

Sesame seeds,
always a sure bet

Sesame seeds are an essential ingredient in Asian and Mediterranean cooking. Ground to a purée or paste, tahini is used in numerous recipes, the most famous being hummus. Sesame seeds are a guarantee of flavour. We use our expertise to propose a whole range of sesame seeds.

Carried out on-site, toasting gives colour to the seeds, which become more or less golden. We also caramelise seeds.

Sesame seeds can be easily used in pastries, desserts in general, or for a sweet/savoury flavour in salads and cooked dishes.

Sources and supply

Sesame (Sesamum indicum) may be one of the first oilseed plants to have been cultivated. A native of the Indian subcontinent, the plant appreciates tropical and subtropical regions.

Today, it is widely grown in South Asia, Africa and South America.

Sesame seeds are available in several forms: whole, natural and hulled, or ground to make tahini or to extract their oil. We also propose black sesame seeds.

FLANQUART diversifies the sources of its sesame seeds to secure its supply (Link to food safety page). We have an established and strict control plan for these seeds, which have sometimes been subject to a number of irregularities in the way they are processed for export, particularly with respect to ethylene oxide (ETO).

We have been working with our suppliers for over 25 years and we carry out on-site audits.

Sesame,
a partner for flavour and health

Sesame seeds have a distinctive flavour that makes them a condiment in their own right. This slightly bitter flavour can be enriched by toasting the seeds to variable degrees.

Carried out on-site, toasting gives colour to the seeds, which become more or less golden. We also caramelise seeds.

Sesame seeds have a high-quality nutritional profile. They contain 45% to 55% fat and are a useful source of monounsaturated fatty acids, including omega-9 oleic acid, and polyunsaturated fatty acids, including omega-6 linoleic acid.

Minerals and antioxidants are available in the seeds, especially the whole seeds. Their protein and fibre content varies but is around 20% per 100 g.
